Salt Springs State Park
Franklin Forks, PA

With the Trifecta of Shameful Eating, we share with our fellow letterboxers one of our greatest guilty pleasures. After spending long days hiking arduous trails in search of the elusive tupperware, we like nothing better than to drag our tired, dirty selves into the local fast food franchise and ruin all that hard work with lots of calories. So we've created an homage to our favorite dinner locations and we decided the best location for this series would be Salt Springs State Park. Get it? Salt Springs? We thought it was appropriate. But this beautiful park has lots of trails and we hope you'll enjoy a hike (around 2-3 hours) around it before dinner.

Salt Springs State Park is easily reached from Montrose by following PA 29 north for six miles to the town of Franklin Forks. Turn left onto Silver Creek Road and follow for one mile to the park entrance. From New York, take NY 7 to PA 29. At Franklin Forks, turn right onto Silver Creek Road and follow for one mile to the park entrance.

Once parked, greet the llamas and then follow the signs for the trails and look for Hemlock Trail. You may also want to pick up a map of the park at the information kiosk near the parking area or print it from the park's web site: http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/parks/saltsprings_maps.aspx

#1 Taco Bell: Take Hemlock up until you come to an intersection with Woodland. Stay right on Hemlock and soon you'll hear waterfalls and encounter a boardwalk along the cliff. Just past "Penny Rock" make a left into the woods and look for a tall stump near a fallen log. On the south side of the stump hides our Mexican delight. Sit on the log, listen to the falls, and enjoy that chalupa. But please be discrete; this part of the trail seems to be busy and Penny Rock attracts a lot of attention.

#2 Wendy's: Return to the boardwalk and head south. At no. 9 stay right on the boardwalk and walk down to the viewing platform to get a good look at those falls. From the center of the platform, head 170 degrees up a trail until it merges with a stone-laid path near a chair. Take the Hemlock trail on the right. Pass no. 10 and you'll descend into a bucolic creekside area where you'll pick up the Fall Brook Trail. Cross the creek and keep a careful eye out for this red trail - it's not always clearly marked. But keep the creek close by on your right.

You'll soon cross a road and will continue on the Fall Brook Trail on the other side. When you come to an intersection with the Bunny Trail, turn right. At the next intersection with the Bunny Trail you'll turn right again and stay on the Fall Brook trail, always looking for those red markers. Just as the trail starts to ascend, count 35 steps and look up hill to your left for a nice rock to sit on. Oh, what's that SPOR beneath you? Hmm, looks like a nice place for a frosty.

#3 McDonald's: Return to the trail and walk for awhile. Eventually you'll head up hill until you encounter a sign for the Bunny Trail again. Turn left and try not to sing "heading down the bunny trail." You'll begin to go down hill. Keep an eye out for a mean tree called Hawthorn and then take 40 steps and look for a rock pile on your left. Sit upon the largest rock and look southwest for a well-protected SPOR. Yum, those fries hit the spot.

Feeling full? Unless you may have picked up a bonus along the way, it's now its time to trudge back to the car. Continue down the Bunny Trail and you'll soon find yourself in familiar terrain. Retrace your steps to head back to the beginning and be sure to visit the local Montrose McDonald's: it's the fanciest we've ever seen (fireplace, flat-screen tv, flowers on the tables) and we've seen a lot of McDonald's!
