New Salem High School

New Salem High School was located on US 52 on the east edge of New Salem (between Rushville and Brookville). It was torn down several years ago after the second wave of consolidation. It was a 12-year public school, then in 1968 they moved the high school grades to Rushville, and in 1990 the junior high grades also went to Rushville and the elementary grades went to either Rushville or Milroy. So much for small class sizes and community spirit.

Today on the site is a monument made from bricks saved from the old school. The playground is still there as well as the basketball courts and a nice picnic shelter. You can park in the old bus driveway between the monument and the playground. After looking at the monument, it’s quite nicely done, head on over to the picnic shelter. We found a great little spot to hide a box under the southern point of the triangle “table” in the northwest corner. Just be sure when you put it back it can’t be seen from the opening above.
