**July 2010 update: I've had 2 reports that all the boxes are missing. I hope to have a chance to check for myself sometime soon. If you haven't been to the "Nose" it's a worthwhile hike.

Directions: Take Rt 88 to the Schoharie exit. Follow 30A south which ends into 30 south. Drive through Scoharie and Middleburg (approx 7 miles). When the road comes to a “T” in Middleburg, bear R and continue on Rt. 30 past the blinking light at Route 30 and Route 145. Make the next right at Mill Valley Road. Trailhead parking is on the left .07 miles down the road.

The “Nose” as locals call it, looks like a giant nose protruding from the earth. The 1200 foot peak provides breathtaking views of Schoharie Valley. The top of the Nose features a ¼ mile slab of rock called, appropriately “The Dance Floor”. The Dance Floor contains carvings from hikers and lovers as far back as 1863. The area at the top of the rock slab is ideal for picnicking. There are also fire pits if you’d like to bring wieners or marshmallows to roast. Don’t forget to also bring extra water to put the fire out (oops…did I mention the trouble we had because “someone” forgot to do that?) Be careful with children and dogs– it is a “true” nature walk and there are no guard rails at the top.

#1 NOT the Nose!
From the parking lot, pass through the gates and start the ascent across an open field along the fence on the right. Entering the woods, follow the “green trail” to the right. This old road leads 0.6 miles to the top of the cliff. You may be fatigued and need to rest at the first circular tree bench you see. If you take out your compass and take a reading of 55 degrees and walk 38 steps, it will lead you to a nice size boulder. Six steps away from that boulder is a large 3-sister tree with a neat cranny hiding box #1. Return to the trail upwards.

#2 Vroman’s Nose
After you rest and enjoy the view from the “Dance Floor” continue in the same direction on the green trail. (This part may be confusing since there are two possible trails; just remember to stay closer to the cliff at this point). In about 0.1 miles you will come to a circular tree bench. Stand on the trail with the cliff behind you, the bench in front of you, take a bearing of 30 degrees. Walk 45 - 50 steps to a mossy trail. Looking towards the woods, you will notice series of mossy stratified rock slabs. Walk 15 steps at the same bearing of 30 degrees. Watch your footing to avoid injury. The box is hidden within one of the layers of the rock. A 6 inch x 6 inch large slab can be removed to reveal the treasure you came to find. A long skinny fallen tree was placed to help guide you to the box, but who’s to say it remains? After stamping in, please return items to the box and put the box and slab where you found them.

#3 Another Nose
Continue on the mossy trail away from the dance floor. It will eventually merge with another trail. The trail will come to the edge before it turns a sharp left downwards. At the sharp left you will see a tree with 3 green markings. Pay attention as you walk just a little bit down the hill and find a skinny tree on the right side of the trail with 2 green trail marks. As you’re leaning on the tree, look (approx. 24 steps away) northward into the wooded area to find a mossy double (or triple?) pine tree beside a fallen log). Box #3, lies between the rock and log.

You may continue down the very steep path leading back to the parking area or backtrack the way you came up to the “nose”.

Thank you for taking care to be discreet, replace all contents into the box, seal, burp, and cover well.
