**RETIRED**
On Weeksville Road (NC-344) is the Elizabeth City airport. This airport is the home of the largest USCG aviation base in the country. The base has two entrances. The main gate is accessed off Weeksville Road about 3 miles SE of Elizabeth City State University. Outside of the base fence, on the right side of the entrance road, there are two static displays that feature USCG aircraft. One is a USCG helicopter hoisting a basket to a USCG small boat. The second is a large amphibious aircraft called the Albatross.

You do not have to go on base to hunt this box. You can park on the grass driveway that the mowers use to access the static display area. Be ready to turn on to that a soon as you turn off of Weeksville Road. It is just past the curbing. Should you miss that, and you get inside the fence line, don’t panic. There is a guard shack at the main entrance to the base. Proceed to the guard shack and tell the security guards at the front gate you just need to turn around so you can look at the display. They’ll turn you around the shack and get you started out towards Weeksville Road again. From there, you can park on the grass access driveway to the area

This letterbox is in a high traffic location due to it being at the main gate. It’s best hunted on the weekends for that reason. It is not an area that sees a lot of foot traffic, so you must be discrete. Take the time to look at the displays. It’ll add to the experience and add to covert hunting and stamping. The guards for the base are not aware of the box location. I think you'll agree that this a vulnerable location.

Simple riddle for this one:
“X” marks the spot on this metal box of white,
That sits on the plane, right there in plain sight.
One foot above the left wheel is where you need to look,
Slide the back off to reveal a huge stamp and the book.
