**As of May 5, 2008 the box and hand made logbook were found to be burnt/damp, but the stamp was in good shape. A new box with a generic logbook has been replaced and ready for visitors! Even if the cicadas aren't due back in the area for another 16 years....

Cicada mania is about to hit - June 2007!…The Periodical Cicada - Brood XIII’s emergence is about to get underway in northern Illinois (with a smattering of the long awaited winged wonders also showing up in the most southern reaches of Wisconsin and far northwestern parts of Indiana) …We’ve been waiting 17 years to get another dose of these amazing creatures!

There are many wonderful Internet sites explaining the phenomenon, but one of our favorites can be found at www.cicadamania.com. There you will find out everything from fact to fiction regarding these insects….including recipes to eat these bundles of protein!

Our hope is that you will enthusiastically embrace this short-lived experience! Don’t let them freak you out by their numbers and keep you from letterboxing!

Easy hike about 15 minutes to the box.

CLUES:
A few blocks west of Harlem Ave. on 151st Street you will find the entrance to an un-marked Cook County Forest Preserve District parking lot – part of the Tinley Creek Woods. (It is north of the intersection of Catalina Dr. and 151st St.). Park and find your way to the North corner of the parking lot. Take the foot path at 20 degrees from that point. (Not the paved bike path by the entrance to the parking lot.)

Follow path until you spy a rusty pipe on the right of the path that is about two and a half feet tall and about 5” in diameter. Immediately after the pipe you will come to a “Y” in the path… take the left. (The path straight ahead is now blocked by a downed tree)

You will come to another decision… do not go toward the pond.

About four minutes past the pond you will come to a slight obstacle course of small trees in the path causing you to zig and zag a bit. Shortly after these trees the trail crosses a small dry wash heading down to the ravine. Cross the wash and count ten steps. There you should find yourself standing next to a fallen burnt log on your right. (At this point you can continue down the path to the creek and check out the creek and the “tree bridge”)…BUT the clues to the letterbox call for you to turn around, and go back on the trail you just came 50 steps from the fallen burnt log.
You will find yourself standing in the path between two trees, one at 80 degrees on your left, and the other at 280 degrees on your right. Look for the fallen tree at 190 degrees from this point about 30 steps off the path. The emerged cicada can be found in the root end. Enjoy stamping her (after all, she is silent ..only the male cicadas make the deafening noise!) And please… refrain from eating her!

As always, please be discreet while stamping in and re-hide well! Also, a reminder to always keep your car locked, and valuables placed out of sight, when parking in a public area.
