SnoFriend #1 -MIA as of August 2007

The stamp in this letterbox was carved in honor of Lindsay’s Snowman’s friend and fellow letterbox adventurer Antimony. It should be no surprise to Antimony as to where this letterbox is planted.

Now for some history. Located throughout southern Ohio are many earthworks from the Adena and Hopewell Indians that lived in this area long ago. Several of these sites are located in the Mariemont, Anderson and Newtown area of Hamilton County. The letterbox SnoLab is located at the Madisonville Site in Mariemont. SnoFriend is located at the Newtown Site.

The Newtown Group. -Upon the same extensive terrace, two miles farther down the valley, also in Anderson township, at the foot of the eastern range of bills, in a position well-chosen for an agricultural village, the Martin mound, one of the largest in this part of the State, rises to the majestic height of forty feet above 'the plain. Within easy view from its tall and solitary summit is an humbler tumulus, standing in the center of the principal cemetery of Newtown. Several other mounds, companions to this, were formerly scattered over the lowland, now covered by the streets of the village.

Taken from “The Archaeology of Hamilton County, Ohio” by S. F. Starr and published by the Cincinnati Museum of Natural History is the following:

“In the Odd Fellows cemetery on Round Bottom Road near Newtown are situated two well-preserved mounds. The larger of the two (33-Ha.-20) is thirteen feet high and of an elliptical shape. To the northeast of that mound is 33-Ha.-21, which is completely covered with the graves of the earliest settlers of Mercersberg, or Newtown. It is not known whether any material of archaeological value was found when the graves were dug.”

SnoFriend is located near the larger of these two mounds in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Newtown, Ohio.

To find this cemetery take Columbia Parkway from downtown Cincinnati, through the villages of Fairfax and Mariemont to Newtown Road. Turn right and cross over the Little Miami River. Turn left at the first street (at the stop sign). At the end of this road, turn right onto Round Bottom Road. The cemetery is on your right before the railroad tracks.

Enter the cemetery and make your way behind the large mound in the center of the cemetery. Park between the graves of Roy and Anna Aichholtz and Sarah and Henry Aichholtz. Facing away from Round Bottom Road, walk to the back of the cemetery. As you walk you will go past Mother and Father Bickel on your left. Then you will pass Corinne Ferris on your right, followed by Clayton Kinman and William Kinman on your right, and David Rhodes on your left to the very large tree with odd vines circling its trunk. Go around to the back to John Schott and then turn and look at the bottom of the trunk of the tree. You will find what you are seeking there under bark and branches.

Please cover well so that the letterbox cannot be seen.

Please contact the placer when you find this letterbox.
