Blue Bend is a great place for hiking, swimming, fishing, biking, picnicking, camping...
The letterbox is a short hike up the 5 mile loop trail, but we encourage you to pack a sack lunch and do the whole thing!
From I-64 in Lewisburg, travel north on 219 for 8 miles. After the Exxon and cemetery on the right, turn right onto Anthony Rd. Go 8.4 miles on this windy road and turn right at the "Blue Bend" sign. (You will pass the Greenbrier River and River Trail after 4 miles.) Park in the first lot on the left.
Follow the short trail to the swinging bridge. Jump on the bridge as you cross (if you dare!) From the Blue Bend Loop trail sign, follow the trail left towards the overlook. This trail becomes quite steep, but hang in there for 15-20 minutes! Stop and enjoy the view. Continue a short distance up the trail to the tree with the plastic blue damond. Look for a large rotting stump, just to your left. Lift the rocks and you will find the Secret Above Blue Bend!
If you follow the trail a little furthur, you will come across 2 more overlooks. They become progressively more scenic, so you may want to extend the hike to the third overlook!
If you're a mountain biker and want to bike this trail- be ready for a technical and greuling ride!
Other great areas nearby include the Greenbrier River Trail (which you crossed on the road up here) and Lake Sherwood. To get to Lake Sherwood, keep going on Anthony Road until it dead ends at Rt. 92. Go north (left) for a few miles and you'll see the sign on the right. The lake is still quite a few miles off of Rt. 92.
Please email us when you find the letterbox and let us know what you think! ENJOY!
