***UPDATE*** Yes, box 1 is missing. I had hoped to replace it the summer when I was visiting my parents, but it didn't happen, so it will have to wait until next spring when I'm in Michigan again. Sorry about that, but the trail is well worth the other three boxes.

***NOTE**** I did maintenance on these boxes on July 16th, 2008. Boxes 3 and 4 were in stumps that were falling apart, so they have been moved and the clues have been updated. Thanks for finding my boxes! Please take the time to log them when you have a chance.*******

We did not plant ink with these, so you will need to make sure you have an ink pad with you.

Difficulty level: NOT handicap or stroller friendly! Easy if you have kids along who enjoy climbing hills off-trail. I carried my 2 year old in a baby backpack all the way with no problem.

Duration: 1.5-2 hours
Distance: About 1.25 miles
Where: Ludington State Park

Getting There:
8 miles N. of Ludington on Lakeshore Dr. and M-116 Hwy.
From Ludington, take Lakeshore Drive north for eight miles. Lakeshore Drive becomes M-116, follow M-116 to the end to the park entrance.

Once you’ve paid a user fee/admission at the main gate, take the first drive on the RIGHT going eastward toward Hamlin Lake. Ask for a trail map, or you can download one at: http://www.michigandnr.com/parksandtrails/trailinfo.asp?id=262 before you head out.

Once past the Beechwood Campground you will come to a sign with arrows indicating the directions to “Boat Launch, Hamlin Beach, Concession, and Hamlin Dam”

You should park in the lot to the left at the far north end of the lot.

Your quest starts at trail marker 14. Head toward trail marker 12 and follow the Island Trail path (blue path).

Box 1: Head off to the right on a long board walk and then over a short board walk. You will come to an old trail marker painted white with a blue foot on it. When you see a bench on your right looking out over the inlet walk a short way farther and you will see a distinct tree bent over toward the east, here you will find your first sea friend looking for a tender morsel.

Box 2: Continue on the path until you come to a large tree that at one time was crossing the path, but now has an opening sawed for the trail. Follow the fallen tree toward the west. You will notice that this tree is sawed in several places as you follow it down to a large split tree. Look higher than waist level. Here your next sea friend awaits you.

Box 3: Your next friend is quite a bit farther down the path. Enjoy the view and the boardwalks as you hike along. You will pass trail marker 10. At this intersection you will leave the Island Trail and head west on the Lost Lake Trail. Stop at the first yellow arrow on the left side of the trail. This isn't too far past the intersection. Take 30 steps up the trail from the yellow marker. At 145 degrees you will find a 12 foot standing dead tree stump. Your sea friend can be found about shoulder high.

***NOTE*** After you find box 3 you will realize it is easy to spot off the path if it is not hidden well. Please make sure you put the bark back so it is hidden completely - THANKS!

Box 4: As you head toward box 4 stop and enjoy the large dune on your left that leads down to a bench. When you come upon trail marker 5 walk up to the stairway on your right. At the bottom of the stairs is a trail marker for the Ridge Trail. Take 41 steps up the ridge trail. Take a reading of 240 degrees. You will see two large, 25 foot high, tree stumps in a line with the 2nd one being in over 50 feet. In the 2nd tree at head high you will find your last sea friend.

We hope you enjoyed this beautiful hike we sure enjoyed it when we hid our boxes.

Thank you for finding our boxes!
