***This box has been confiscated by the park ranger and will not be replaced.***

The beauty of old masonry, the warmth of the hearth on a cold day. These are what the cozy Chimneys and Cornerstones quilt block will remind you of. This quilt block has an architectural feel to it reminiscent of old brickwork and a traditional design with character and depth. I intended to place this letterbox on the Homestead Trail in this park so you could see the stone ruins of Thomas McKinney’s old home, but on the day we were here, Onion Creek was up and the only way to get to the trail is to cross the creek at the lower falls. If you can cross the creek, do so and find the homestead.
Directions:
This letterbox is in McKinney Falls State Park. Located 13 miles southeast of the Texas state capitol in Austin. From Austin, take Highway 183 south to McKinney Falls Parkway. Park is 2 miles west of this intersection. Enter the park, pay fee at entry station and get a map. Find the Smith Nature Center and park in the parking area. It’s open from 10:00 to 3:00 depending on staff availability. For more about the park, see Boots Tex’s letterbox “On Onion Creek”, which is also in this park.
To the Box:
Go to the trailhead for the Rockshelter Trail and head down the trail to the right. Watch for numbered posts along the trail. This trail goes along a bluff along the creek and there are little overlook paths off the main trail, so be sure that the kids don’t get too close to the edge. From marker no. 4, take the trail to the right. When you come to the bridge, stop. Look to the right for a social trail leading to a huge double-trunked oak tree. The box is at the junction of the two trunks, covered with twigs and forest debris. Be sure to go on over the bridge to see the rock shelter.
