INACTIVE UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

If you have done the "Who's Hoo" series of letterboxes then you will be familiar with Tecolote Canyon. This is our contribution to the owl population in another section of the canyon.

This is about a 30 to 40 minute round trip hike with a few mildly steep areas, but a good hike for kids because of the short distance and our theme. There are NO bathroom facilities. Watch out for poison oak.

Directions:
From the 805 fwy exit Balboa West. Turn left on Genesee. Turn right at the 3rd light which is Boyd. Follow Boyd up the hill and continue past the first two streets on the left. After the 2nd street on the left (which is Old Meadow) turn into the little parking lot on the left and park. This is the trail head. Start walking on the trail and follow our story.

CLUES:

"Winnie the Pooh's Search for Owl"

Winnie the Pooh was walking along a trail in the Hundred-Acre wood one day and humming to himself when who should he happen upon, at a fork in the trail, but his very best friend Piglet.
"Well, hello there Piglet. What are you doing?" he asked.
"Oh, hello Pooh. I'm just picking flowers," said Piglet. "What are you doing?"
"I am searching for Owl," replied Pooh.
"Why are you searching for Owl? asked Piglet as he sniffed his bouquet of flowers.
Pooh, being a Bear of very little brain declared, "Oh Bother! I am afraid I have forgotten. But, perhaps when I find Owl I will remember why I was searching for him."
So the two friends set off together in search of Owl taking the left fork in the trail that lead down into the canyon.
They were scrambling quickly down the steep slope and carefully watching their footing so they did not see Tigger bouncing along. Right at the sharp bend in the trail they almost collided.
"Whoo - Hoo - Hoo!" cried Tigger. "I didn't see you there".
"Oh hello Tigger," said Pooh. "We are searching for owl. Have you seen him today?"
"Why yes", said Tigger. "He was down by the creek with Christopher Robin who was swinging on his rope swing".
"Why, thank you Tigger", said Pooh. "We will go to the creek and look for him there".
"Okey Dokey", said Tigger. "T.T.F.N. - Ta Ta for now!", and he bounced up the hill.
Pooh and Piglet continued on the path a little longer until they came to a "T" in the trail. At this point they went left. About 25 steps later they took a right onto another path which lead them directly to a tree. They stood before the tree and looked around Christopher Robin's secret play area. Slightly to their left was his rope swing hanging over the creek. But there was no sign of Christopher Robin, or Owl.
"Oh Bother!" said Pooh.
"What's that sound?" said Piglet.
The two friends stood very still and listened. They heard a soft hooting sound coming from a tree about 10 paces to their right. There was Owl sleeping at the base of the tree, snoring softly.

And there you will find our letterbox, where the tree splits into three trunks, under dried leaves and rocks.
