Directions to the Rail Trail:
From I-87 (NY State Thruway) take exit 18 to Route 299 East. Go approximately 2 1/4 miles. Turn right at the Hess Station, onto New Paltz Road (Route 12). The parking lot is off of the right side of the road. You'll see a sign, caboose, and a pavilion.

This path is flat and paved, ideal for biking or walking.
For maps and info on the Rail Trail, please visit: www.hvnet.com/features/highlandrailtrail.htm

As you search for this series, please be aware that this is a busy trail and most boxes are fairly close to the edge of the path. Please re-hide all boxes well, and very conscious of muggles!

Also, please save a bit of room between your stamped images on the page--there may just be an opportunity for fun later!

Box #1: Riverdale High
Head down the paved trail to the northwest. Approximately 50 yards from the parking lot and before the tressle, look to the right and see a stump showing regrowth. The box is behind the stump, in a nook at the base, under leaves and two rocks.

Box #2: Mr. Weatherbee
Keep heading northwest on the trail. You will pass by two private property signs and access points on either side of the trail. Continuing just past these points, on the paved trail, look to the right to see a rusty I-beam with bolts coming out. The box is under the I-beam, hidden behind rocks. Please rehide well.

Box #3: Miss Beazley
Continuing down the paved trail, you will pass the second bridge, a concrete arch. After the bridge, look to the right (north) to see a hollow tree stump. This box is inside the stump, covered with rocks and organic debris. Please replace the covering well!

Box #4: Miss Grundy
Walk further down the trail until you see two concrete blocks on the left side of the trail, just before the bench on the right side. The first block is painted with a smiley face.
Standing between the two blocks, facing south, see an old railroad tie. The box is behind the tie, under a small slab of concrete.

Box #5: Midge
Now head to the bench on the right side (north) of the trail. Walk approximately 155 steps down the path and then look to your right. Just below eye-level, you will see a small, dark, horizontal notch. This notch will be behind three small, slender trees. The letterbox is hidden in the horizontal notch, behind a rock.

Box #6: Moose
Continue along the path until the outcrop of rocks on the left (south) dwindles down. At the end of this outcrop, you will see a short tree stump.
Look above the stump and slightly to the right to see a vertical crevice. Moose is hidden in the crevice under a rock. The day we visited, there was a bit of broken glass just to the right of the crevice. Please be careful!

Box #7: Dilton Doiley
Keep walking down the trail, past/over the little stream. See a large maple tree on the left (south) side of the path with a large, pitted rock at its roots.
From this tree, go approximately 42 steps to a triple stump on the left side of the path. Take 3-4 more steps forward on the path, and you should see two short railroad ties sloping against a boulder. Dilton is hidden under the upper tie, at the top end of the lower tie, covered with a rock.

Box #8: Ethel
Walking down the trail, you will come to a bench on the right hand side of the path, underneath a signal. Sit on the bench and look across the trail (south) to a triple-trunked stump. To the left of the triple-trunked stump are two trees that form a V. Between the stump and this tree, see a steep slope.
Walk up the slope until it flattens out slightly, just past the V tree. Turn left and continue walking uphill, toward the rocks, approximately 15 steps.
After the 15 steps, you should be at a large rock, perched on a ledge, at approximately waist height.
From this rock/ledge, turn to your right and walk 12 steps with the rock face on your left.
After the 12 steps, turn to your left and notice the almost vertical crevice in the rock face, just behind the fallen tree. You may also notice that there is a piece of wire running through this crevice.
At the base of the crevice, under a rock, you will find Ethel.

Maybe look for another planter's letterbox nearby?!!

Box #9: Reggie
Continuing down the paved trail, look left (south) for a large, triple-trunked tree growing out of the rocks. There will be another large tree below it. Beginning at this tree, count 24 steps farther down the path.
At this point, you will see a red caution sign to the right of the trail and a rock between two trees on the left side of the trail. (The right tree is a double-trunker.)
Reggie can be found behind this rock, between it and a rock standing up. It is covered by sticks--please replace them well.

Box #10: Veronica
Keep walking, past the silver pole and the bench on the left. Go approximately 50 steps and turn right down a little trail. (Using your imagination, there is a "doorway" to the trail created by two large trees.)
Walk parallel to the stone wall and underneath the fallen tree. Approximately 18 steps past the fallen tree, look left (west) to see two small tree, in line with a large, barkless, cracked tree on the other side of the wall.
Box 10 is in the stone wall, just below waist-level, in line with these three trees.
It is behind two lichen-covered stones that will need to be carefully replaced to avoid discovery by muggles.
Enjoy the pond and the beaver house!

Box #11: Jughead
Enjoy the view as you continue on and walk past the staircase and green information sign. You will continue for quite awhile, to the split log bench on the left side of the trail. From this bench, count 240 steps (120 paces) to a small cedar tree on the right side of the trail. (When we were here, it was decorated with tinsel.)
Behind the cedar is a larger, dead tree with a hollow base. Jughead is hiding out in this hollow base, under some bark. Please be especially careful when you rehide, covering the box fully.

Box #12: Betty
Go to the large, toppled concrete obelisk on the right side of the path. Walk back 45 steps to a small path in the woods on your left (to the north) with dead birches along its edge. Go down the path until you see a cracked boulder on the ground to your left. Go 10 steps farther down this dirt path, and then turn around facing the paved trail. See a mound of broken railroad ties. Betty is hidden in these ties.

Box #13: Archie
Continue back down the dirt path, heading away from the paved trail. Stop when you see a number of birch trees on your right, on the edge of the trail. Look to your left (to the southwest), and you will see a four-trunked tree. Archie awaits in the middle of this tree, under sticks. Please rehide well.
