The Knowlton Family Cemetery off of Guard Hill Road. The cemetery is located between McLain St. in Mt. Kisco and West Patent Road in Bedford. It sits adjacent to a new home. This is a section that is still wooded and undeveloped. Knowlton Avenue is in Mt Kisco and runs straight into Guard Hill Road. Parking is limited, just past/before the cemetery, is a small area where dirt has been pushed into the woods that can hold a car. Across the road, is a post and rail fence which can be used also. Please note: The cars that travel this road seem to be “in quite a rush” for an old, dirt country road. Use caution with your children. You will hear the “roar” as they approach.
History: The Knowlton family owned and farmed this land. The descendants were in this area until the 1920's. The earlier Knowlton’s started farming the land in the 1600's. The family tree dates back to the 1500's, with William(sea captain)and Ann Smith Knowlton, from Kent, England. The cemetery is beautifully maintained. It has newly placed sod and a sprinkler system.(?) The gate is in need of repair. The stone walls are quite beautiful for their age. The family members include: Stephen and Phoebe, Robert and Margaret, Ephraim and Sarah Knowlton and some their young children. Long inscriptions are on some of the stones. They no longer can be read.
When entering the gate, walk straight towards the setting sun. (Hint:Take a right)Approx. 20 steps. Next to the corner on top of the stone wall toward the left side is the letterbox. Please re-hide with same stones. Gently close the delicate gate on your way out. Across the street is “Guard Hill Pond Letterbox.”
