NOTE: I received a report that an animal attacked the box. Stamp is OK, but container & logbook need to be replaced. If you can, I would really appreciate it if you could bring a new container & logbook to do some maintenance. THANKS!

Location: State Park on Hwy 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) between Corona Del Mar and Laguna Beach. The parking lot is approximately 2 miles north of Laguna Beach. Turn east at the traffic lights near an elementary school. You will drive through part of the school parking lot to get to the road that leads to the parking lot for the park.

Hike Distance: Approximately 3 miles

Terrain: Hilly dirt trail in open area. Nice ocean views!

Note: You will need to pay a daily fee of $10 (in 2007) to use the park. Trail maps may be available at the ranger station or you can find one here:

Bring water along on your hike because it can get rather warm on the open trails.

CLUES

Avast ye mateys! A pirate ship, with the Jolly Roger flag flapping in the breeze, was recently seen gliding into the cove. After anchoring, the captain went to look over the booty they had recently plundered from other ships. But upon opening the treasure chest he exclaimed “Shiver me timbers!” and growled “Arrgh!”

He quickly strode to the deck and shouted “Which one of you scurvy dogs stole the crystals? You’ll be walking the plank and resting in Davy Jones locker as soon as I catch the cur who has them.” Upon hearing this, one of the crew quietly slipped down Jacob’s ladder and began swimming to shore. He wasn’t noticed by the other pirates in the general uproar on the ship. However you spotted him and decided to follow him to see what he might be up to.

He obviously had decided to head for the hills, perhaps to stash his treasure. He hurried along the El Moro Canyon Cutoff trail, which started at the bottom of the parking lot. This made sense, because it was the first trail he came to as he made his way up from the sea.

He continued on this trail for quite a while, bypassing both the B.F.I, and East Cut Across trails that went off to the right. However when he finally reached the West Cut Across (“Mach One”) trail, he took that and headed up. When he got to the No Name Ridge trail he headed south and headed down a short steep hill. The trail then leveled out and began to rise again. As it did so, the pirate slowed his pace and began to furtively look around. When he saw the small rock outcropping on the left, about 10 steps from the trail, he stopped. He checked the trail in both directions to see who might be spying on him (you should do the same), and then slunk in to crouch under a rock, in a hole behind the largest rock in the middle of the outcropping. But when you go in to ask this scalawag where the jewels are, all you’ll get is a wink and a smile.

After returning the pirate to his hiding position, continue south until you reach the “No Dogs” trail. You can take this trail all the way back to the parking lot.

Status reports on the pirate would be greatly appreciated, since I live a long way from California, and won’t be able to check on him myself.
