October 2011: Boxes have been rescued by Slow Camel! Woo hoo!!!

The old clues were at:
eyejustdesign.com/thither.org/galpals/omasoutlook.html

Update: Oct 2020
These boxes have been adopted and clues listed here are the original clues. If they need updating I will do so down the line, but as of now, they still seem to work. Remember, they are clues, not directions. Read the comments of other boxers who have looked for them, there are some helpful insights. Also, if you go, please consider bringing some extra baggies or a box in case repairs are needed for these almost 20 year old boxes.
original clues:
Oma's Outlook

(Durham, Connecticut)

OMA'S OUTLOOK is the name of a letterbox placed on September 8, 2001 on the MICA HILL LEDGES in Durham, Connecticut in Middlesex County.

Difficulty : a single letterbox on a relatively easy hike. The exception is the short but steep climb to the top. It is approximately 1 hour's duration (thirty minutes to the ledges and thirty back). However, once up at the ledges, you will want to stay and take in the view.

Directions: From Durham Town Center, take RT 17 south. Turn left onto RT 77. After approximately 1 mile turn left onto Diongi Rd. (If you come to Mica Hill Rd., you have gone too far.) At the end of Diongi, take a rightand go to the end of the paved road. Park on the left side of the paved portion to allow other vehicles to pass.

The Hike: From the parking lot, follow the Blue Trail to the right. Stay on the Blue Trail even when the path forks. ( stay to the left at the fork) Follow the Blue Trail to Pyramid Rock and on past up the step hill-that's the most difficult part. Now enjoy the hike along the ridge until you come to the ledges ( exposed rock face ). The smaller ledge is first and then comes Oma's Outlook, the largest of the rock faces. Bring water and a snack as you will want to sit and feel the joy of just being there. If you bring children, tell them to be careful, a fall on the rock will hurt. When you are done, follow the Blue Trail back the way you came.

The Letterbox is hidden on the north end of Oma's Outlook under a granite flake of rock. Look under the farther end of the flake, away from the trail. It has a rock and some branches in front of it. Please be so kind as to return the letterbox when you are done and replace the rock and branches.

OMA’S OUTLOOK ADD-ONS

The Gal Pals have placed another 2 letterboxes along “Oma’s Path” on the Mica Hill Ledges. The boxes were planted 8/4/02.

DIRECTIONS- follow the directions to OMA’S OUTLOOK in Durham.

DIFFICULTY- EASY, ONCE YOU ARE UP ON THE LEDGES. There is one steep scramble up to the ledges in the beginning (take your time).

REMEMBER- a pace is equal to one left and one right step. Read through the clues so that you know where and when to count paces. We did not have our pedometer with us to give mileage. Sorry !

The Hike- From the southern end of Oma’s Outlook, continue south along Oma’s Path ( Blue Blazed ) . At 80 paces, you begin a slight descent. At 140 paces, you will see a blue blazed tree (it looks like 2 sister trees, however, they are fraternal twins- equal but separate.) Look to your left at 40 degrees to the rock ledge. Bushwhack up 13-15 steps to the rock ledge and the Messenger (Turkey Vulture) Letterbox is hidden in a rock crevice just under the tree. Stamp in and carefully rehide the letterbox as many bikers and hikers often pass this way.

From the blue blazed tree on Oma’s Path where you looked left, continue heading southward through Mountain Laurel and at 130 paces (from Messenger-Turkey Vulture) the RED TRAIL merges on the left (east) at 60 degrees. This is just a landmark for you. Stay on Oma’s Path (the BLUE blazed trail). In another 25 paces, you will come to the cairn that marks the tri-border of Durham to the north, Guilford to the south and Madison to the East. This is a very old cairn with some of the stones bearing dates from 1889,1895, and 1904. Please, please be mindful of these stones. We would never consider hiding a letterbox here and disturbing them. Instead, go 25 paces southward from the cairn along Oma’s Path to a relatively steep descent down large boulders. At the first landing and before the trail descends to the BLUE blazed tree, bushwhack left at 45 degrees along the ledge outcrop 10-12 steps and the “COYOTE SONG LETTERBOX” is hidden at the base of the ledge under a flake of granite. Stamp in and carefully replace the letterbox please

.
You may retrace your steps along Oma’s Path (rest again at The Outlook for water or a snack) then head back down to the parking area (like us) or some of you may be adventurous and wish to continue on the blue trail. Eventually, we are told, the trail hooks up near the Bluff Head Trail in North Guilford. There are more letterboxes down that-a-way but this will take some time and energy and, hopefully, another car which has been parked at the Bluff

.
We hope you enjoy your day out on OMA’S PATH and by the way, we do hear the coyotes sing from the ledges at night and by day, the turkey vultures and hawks soar above Oma’s Outlook . These are her Messengers who bring JOY to those who come to the Mica Hill Ledges. There are now 4 letterboxes here.

Blessings, The Gal Pals
