This series started out as two series for the 2007 LB gathering here in San Diego. Then I decided to merge them into one...

The address for this park is 1851 South Melrose Drive, Vista, CA. If you look up the directions anywhere online, it will only tell you how to get to the general area on South Melrose where 1851 should be. That will get you close enough. Here’s what you need to know more specifically: follow the online directions to S. Melrose. When you get toward where 1851 S. Melrose should be, look for Shadowridge Drive (which intersects S. Melrose) and make a right on Shadowridge Drive. You will drive past some baseball diamonds and come to a small street called Antigua. Make a left on this street and that will take you into the parking lot.

Sports Series

Padres
Enter from Gate “A”, the yellow gate nearest to the parking area.
Continue walking until the path forks. Do not take the path the goes up the steep hill; instead follow the path along the foot of the mountain.

Walk along the path for awhile until you get to the Melrose Street overpass. Do not go under the overpass yet but turn to your left and walk to the yellow gate to enter onto Melrose Street. Turn right and walk across the bridge on the Melrose Street sidewalk – remember that the speed limit is 50 miles per hour. Pass the bike lane lamppost until you get to the second set of yellow gates; go back onto the dirt path. Walk along this dirt path until it starts to rise steeply up a hill. At the base of the hill, on the left side of the path is a “naked tree” with no bark and three trunks. Walk 30 paces uphill from the base of the tree. On the right side of the path is a dead tree root grown into the side of the path. There are little critter holes in the ground around the tree root. The Padres letter box is hidden in that tree root.

Chargers
Continue up to the top of the hill and follow the path to your right. Walk toward the “two-legged” electrical poles at the end of the path. Go to the left leg and turn around. Walk about 20 yards to a cluster of boulders with a poketey tree in the middle. Hidden behind the boulder on the right is the S.D. Chargers letter box (go Chargers!!)

Creatures of Wonderland

Cheshire Cat
Return down the hill. When you get to the yellow gates again (the set that you encountered SECOND on your way up), go down the gravel path so you can go under the Melrose Street overpass.

Go under the Melrose Street overpass. Continue along the tree-lined path until you get to a clearing. On your right will many boulders and large trees (you will also see a small orange post on the side of the road).

Hidden at the base of the flat-trunked tree, behind the boulder with thin remnants of orange and red graffiti, is the Cheshire Cat. There might be some poison oak around; be careful.

Jabberwocky - *MISSING*
Keep going along the path. At the end of the path is a bridge that crosses the river. Cross the bridge to the other side of the river. On the right side of the path is a tree with hollowed out branches. At the base of the tree, hidden among the “muck” (hay and other debris) is the Jabberwocky.

Humpty Dumpty *MISSING*
Walk along the river path. There are times when the path splits up but it will come back together again. Generally, it is easier to follow the path away from the river (along the drainage ditch) but it can be fun to cross over the narrow parts of the river. As you continue to walk, you will come to another clearing with many large boulders on your left. As you look left, you will see a wooden sign on a post. Walk directly to the wooden sign.

From the wooden sign look at the biggest and highest boulder – it looks like Humpty Dumpty (with eyes, prominent nose and mouth). Say hi!

Look past the wooden sign and continue walking about 15 feet to another hollowed out tree stump. Humpty Dumpty stamp is hiding in there.

Continue along the path to return to your starting point.
