Below you'll see a series of numbers, three numbers to a group. Each grouping represents one letter. The first number in the group is the line number, the second number is the word in that line, and the third number is the letter in that word. So the group 23-8-5 means to look for the letter at the 23rd line in the poem, 8 words over, and the fifth letter of that word. A slash (/) between number groups separates words. An asterisk ( * ) separates each letter within a word to make the numbers easier to read.

1. Wasps were the world's very first papermakers.
2. By chewing slivers of wood, wasps make a fiber paste.
3. They spread it in thin layers to make a light but strong, "paper" nest.
4. The word "paper" comes from the name of the papyrus plant.
5. It grew wild along the Nile River in Egypt about 4,000 years ago.
6. Ancient Egyptians used to pound the leaves flat to write on.
7. In 1666, in England, cotton and linen were prohibited from being
8. used for burial shrouds in order to make them available for
9. papermaking.
10. In the 1800s, paper was made from old clothes and rags.
11. Around 1855, Egyptian mummies were imported to the US.
12. Their wrappings were used for papermaking!
13. Unfortunately, mill workers caught cholera from the mummies.
14. The average American uses 749 pounds of paper products each year.
15. About two-thirds of the raw material used to make paper in the
16. United States comes from recovered paper that is recycled, and
17. the wood debris left from lumber manufacturing.
18. Hardwood trees (oaks and maples) have wood with short fibers.
19. Paper made from these species is weaker than from softwoods.
20. But its surface is smoother, and better to write and print on.
21. Softwood trees (pine and spruce) have long fibers.
22. Paper made from this type of wood is much stronger.
23. This paper is ideal for making shipping containers that require strength.
24. Most paper is made from both hardwoods and softwoods.
