Originally placed by the GalPals and adopted in February 2012 by DevilinDog. Clues updated 11/17/16. All boxes are still available, if anyone goes to them, the last box could use a new lock and lock if you have a spare. Original clues were at

eyejustdesign.com/thither.org/galpals/broomstick.html - changes were made to the clues on 3/15/12 and are reflected on this page.

The Broomstick Ledges Series (4) (Log book is now only in the last box as of Feb 5, 2012)

North Guilford, Connecticut

Directions: On Route 77 in North Guilford just north of Lake Quonnipaug. Park in the Bluff Head Trail parking area. The Trail is across the road from the Bluff Head Trail. Look for the Blue Blazes on the trees.

Description: A one mile in and one mile out hike over moderate up and down beautiful terrain. If Slow Camel can keep up with Butterfly- anyone can do it !! We both are over half a century but you’d never know that Butterfly is…J

The Hike: Head into the woods in a northeasterly direction. Head up the hill passing beeches and continuing upward. Look to your left for a two sister sling-shot on a rocky knoll due north. From the sling-shot take fifteen steps to a two sister stump holding up a long dead relative. There you will find the “Extinct is Forever- #1 Letterbox” –(There will be more in this series to come). Once you have signed in go back to the trail and continue on Blue (always on Blue !!!) Up through a laurel grove and passing moss covered rocks. (Take a moment to really look at the moss-there are many different species here) Now down, down to cross a small stream-awesome rocks. Pass by the rock wall (Bigger than a house, smaller than a mountain) Climb around the end, staying on the Blue. Look for another two sister sling-shot on the right- STOP. Put your back to the tree and look uphill(North). Notice at 350 degrees and in about 15 steps, there are two trees up by the bigger than a house rock. There is a hide-y hole in the bottom of one. Ah-ha..the “Synchronicity Letterbox” is hidden. Rehide the box carefully and continue on the Blue along a small stream on your left. Soon a moderate ascent and, of course, a moderate downward hike along with it. ( A good time for a water break and rest) Turn and look over your right shoulder at the beautiful rocks-oh my ! ! Go right and pass through the Squeeze, turning and twisting…Look for a young beech in the middle of the trail with a blue blaze-STOP-sight north on your left a small rocky knoll topped by a huddle of three trees. ( What a great _expression- we’ll use that one again in the future !!) From there take two giant steps to a split rock (sound familiar?) and peek beneath. There you will find “The Greatest Generation Letterbox”. Carefully cover up and retrace your steps to the Trail. Soon you will spy a lovely glacial erratic. Say “hello” and pat-pat Her; she has been waiting eons to see you. Scurry, scurry up and down over three stone staircases. To borrow the clues from the Menunkatuck Trail box "at the top of one of the many ups you'll see ahead of you twin boulders to the left of a multi sister tree".To the left of the left boulder and in front of it, you will see a very small ledge- Your treasure, the "Messenger #2( The Red Tail Hawk) Letterbox " is hidden on the left under a tiny ledge about eight feet over from the boulders.
Retrace your steps back the way you came to the parking lot on Route 77 or if your are daring hikers and have read your Blue Book CT Guide, you know that up a ways ahead the Broomstick Ledges connect to the Mica Hill Ledges where there are Signs that you are loved… On the Mattabesett trail, you'll find the Broomstick Butterfly and OMA awaits you with her Outlook and Messenger #1-Turkey Vulture and Coyote Song, and perhaps you'd like to go on a Quest? (2/12 edit: more recently added are Menunkatuck Trail, Menunkatuck's Duck or start Boxing the NET)

Butterfly and I hope you have enjoyed your hike and have left the Woods better than when you entered. Planted April 15, 2003

Blessings,
Slow Camel
