Whittaker Creek - almost a drive-by & Old Growth Ridge Trail - a box for those that enjoy a bit of a hike.

Whittaker Creek is part of the Siuslaw Watershed that drains from the coast range into the Pacific Ocean. It provides habitat vital to the conservation of Salmon, Steelhead, Cutthroat Trout and other fish species. In the pools just above the fish trap you can watch these magnificent fish spawning.

Sept. thru Dec. Chinook Salmon
Nov. thru Jan. Coho Salmon
Jan. thru May Steelhead
Nov. thru Mar Cutthroat Trout

S.T.E.P. (Salmon and Trout Enhancement Program) is a program of O.D.F.W, which uses volunteers in the important role of restoration of salmon, steelhead and trout. Since 1981 thousands of volunteers have assisted Oregon's fisheries through their involvement in STEP. They have donated money, materials, equipment, and countless hours of time and labor. STEP volunteers have completed stream habitat restoration work, conducted surveys, helped with education projects, and hatched and reared several million salmon and trout eggs. The combined effort of all STEP volunteers has made an important and measurable impact toward conservation of Oregon's valuable fish resources. Volunteers come away with a better understanding of fish and the systems upon which they depend.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS: Go east from Florence or west from Eugene on Hwy 126. Turn south toward Whittaker Creek onto Siuslaw Rd. between the 26 and 27 mile markers. Follow Siuslaw Rd. around a short curve to the right and then go left at the “T”. Continue for 2 mi - when you see the Whittaker Creek ¼ mi turn right and go into the Whittaker Creek Campground.

CLUES
S.T.E.P. Box: From the parking lot walk to view the creek and the fish trap. Hopefully you will be able to spot some fish circling in the pools above the rapids. Then proceed approximately NW to the covered picnic area across from the restrooms. Under the NE corner of the gazebo is a Steelhead who jumped right up out of the stream to wait there for you.

up to the TOP Box: As the name of the box says hike the Old Growth Ridge Trail up to the top. Enjoy the many viewpoints, resting spots and old growth firs on your way. The first Trillium of spring were blooming when we planted this box. When you think you have finally reached the summit keep going just a little further along the ridge to the end of the trail. Playing musical benches you will be lucky, even with #13 present, if you sit in the middle of the ½ log bench facing outward and reach down between your feet.

Both of these stamp are a little larger than average. They are “Stained Glass” type stamps, which look best when inked with a dark color, preferably black, stamped and then colored in afterward.
