At this location is where jazz and blues began. It all started with the Louisiana laws that said that black slaves must have one day a week off, which was on Sunday. All people in Louisiana were required to go to the Catholic church which is about 4-5 blocks at the other end of the street. Sunday afternoons after the Catholic service, the black slaves would gather at Congo square. jazz and blues and eventually many other forms of musisc evolved from this mixing of the Catholic music with the beat of the music in Congo square.

Walk along the fence of Congo Square on Rampart Street to the intersection with Orleans Street. Look into the park for a sign facing you about the history of the Square. Look to the right for a big tree near the fence. Facing the tree, notice a palm tree to the right of the big tree. The box is inside the fence against the concrete “curb”, right at the palm tree. If the park is open, be sure to locate and view the Louis Armstrong statue.
