The Ogress Letterbox is in Pedernales Falls State Park along the Twin Falls Trail.
Distance: 1/4 mile round trip.
Difficulty: Moderate. Rocky terrain, bad for knees and ankles, fun for kids. Slippery when wet.
Clues:
After two years of living in Texas, our large green ogre, Shrek, was able to convince his wife to join him. Of course, she chose a different place in the park to live. His area was much too crowded. She chose a place with a beautiful area, off limits to visitors such as us, where she could set up house in peace. The path is much less traveled than Shrek's path, and she enjoys the scenery and solitude.
To find her letterbox, take the trail to the Twin Falls. This trailhead is located in the camping area. There is parking for the trail near camping site 21. Take the trail right next to this campsite to the wooden deck over looking the falls. Look down and see if the ogress Fiona might have left part of her picnic along the swimming hole. This is her favorite place to be, expecially since we are not allowed in it, and if she doesn't hear you coming, she might not have enough time to grab all her things before she leaves. If you have binoculars, maybe you can even spot some muddy footprints.
After admiring the view, go back up the stone steps you just came down, they should run to the east. At the very top step, which should be the 30th one, look for a medium-sized stone outcropping at a compass bearing of 280 degrees. It is about 9 steps from the path. About two feet up the rocks, covered with smaller stones and sticks, is a crevice with the Ogress letterbox. Hopefully, she likes the little cave and is still there.
Please wedge the box back in the crevice and re-cover well with rocks and sticks.
You can continue back along the path, which has more fun rocks for the kids to climb on and a couple benches soon after the falls, or turn back. It seemed roughly the same distance both ways.
