9 July 2007 Trail has been reopened and boxes are available.

Hike Length: 2 miles roundtrip.
From Payson take highway 260 east about 25 miles. After mile marker 278 watch for trailhead 260 sign across the road on the left. Be careful making the left turn. Park near the porta-potty.

Venemous Viper:
Walk 15 minutes up the trail. Pass a grey diamond marker on a tree to the right of the trail. Walk through a tiny agave nursery. See second grey diamond marker on tree on right. Behind the flat boulder on the right of the marked tree, on the uphill side. Look under moveable rocks for the venemous viper. Watch out for the real thing.

Ringtail Rascal:
Continue on the trail about 20 minutes more to where the stream crosses smooth red rocks. (It might be dry in summer.) Just below the crossing is a shallow pool where the Ringtail Rascal can wash his food and clean his paws.

Cross over to the V shaped evergreen. Aim your compass through the pine at 285 degrees - up the hill. Spy two agave growing from the red rock face 20 paces up the hill. The Ringtail Rascal rests beneath the larger agave under moveable rocks. Be careful reaching!

Hearty hiker can continue miles and miles up the trail. The rest of us turn around at this point. Watch for animal tracks along the trail. We saw numerous tracks and scat, including those of elk.
