HISTORY
Country music superstar Kenny Rogers lays claim to over 70 hit singles (22 of them Number Ones), 20 Platinum albums, and worldwide sales of over 105 million albums. During the height of his popularity in the late 70s and early 80s he was selling more than a million records a month for 26 months straight. He has the distinction of being the only artist to chart a record in each of the last 6 decades (50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s). Just about anyone could quickly name a handful of his catchy, sing-along, story-telling songs. Our favorite (and reportedly, his), was the title track to his 1978 album “The Gambler”. The song hit #1 on the country chart and #16 on the pop chart, and also inspired 5 movies and a TV mini-series. The lyrics are included here in case you need some entertainment on your drive to the trailhead…

The Gambler

On a warm summer's eve, on a train bound for nowhere
I met up with a gambler; we were both too tired to sleep.
So we took turns a starin' out the window at the darkness
'Til boredom overtook us, and he began to speak.

He said, "Son, I've made my life out of readin' people's faces
And knowin' what the cards were by the way they held their eyes.
So if you don't mind my sayin', I can see you're out of aces.
For a taste of your whiskey I'll give you some advice."

So I handed him my bottle and he drank down my last swallow.
Then he bummed a cigarette and asked me for a light.
And the night got deathly quiet, and his face lost all expression.
Said, "If you're gonna play the game, boy, ya' gotta learn to play it right.

You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em,
Know when to walk away, know when to run.
You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table.
There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin's done.

Now every gambler knows the secret to survivin'
Is knowin' what to throw away and knowing what to keep.
'Cause ev'ry hand's a winner and ev'ry hand's a loser
And the best you can hope for is to die in your sleep."

So when he'd finished speakin', he turned back towards the window,
Crushed out his cigarette and faded off to sleep.
Then somewhere in the darkness the gambler, he broke even.
But in his final words I found an ace that I could keep.

You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em,
Know when to walk away, know when to run.
You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table.
There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin's done.

TO THE BOX
From the west side of the Las Vegas Beltway (Hwy 215), exit at Charleston Blvd and go west about 5 miles to the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. The park is open roughly sunup to sundown every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Days. There is an entry fee of $5 per car, which we found well worth it for the park’s natural beauty and our fun encounter with local wild burros!

After enjoying the Visitor Center, stay left and enter the 13-mile, one-way scenic loop road. In the 7th mile, take a side road to the Willow Springs Picnic Area and Lost Creek Trail and then park in the first lot you come to on your left. From the center of the lot, head south on the Lost Creek Canyon Trail. At the first trail junction, hang a right toward Ice Box Canyon. Before long, you’ll find a memorial bench under a pine tree on the edge of a wash. Sitting on the bench, look to your left and back over your shoulder a smidge (325* magnetic). At eye level is a large boulder that appears to be supported by a smaller one. The box is under this rock, behind a small (wo)man-made rock wall. Inside the box you’ll find an ace that you can keep.
