Cedar Lake Chamber of Commerce Letterbox

Submitted by James D. Wozniewski, 25 February 2007

Trailhead: US 41 & 133rd Street

Note: This is an excellent biking excursion when the weather permits. The route may be walked, but be wary of the traffic. A vehicle makes this hunt very pleasurable. Please note that since Cedar Lake is a body of water, nautical terms will apply!

Begin the search for the letterbox at the corner of US 41 (Wicker Ave) and 133rd Street. There is a Walgreen’s Drugstore, a BP Amoco fuel station, and a restaurant associated with a clown. Historically this was the center of a town called Cook.

Proceed due East from this intersection for a distance of 1.91 Nautical Miles (NM).

As you travel East you will cross over an active railroad crossing. Just beyond the crossing is the Hanover Junior/Senior Central School building on the North side of the street. Take note of this location because it was the site of the Cedar Lake Airport until the mid 1950’s. Next comes the library building that was opened in 2006. Both of these organizations have websites that contain a great deal of information about the area.

Take note of the Fire Department, which is also on the North side of the street. The fire department serves both the town of Cedar Lake and the surrounding townships.

As you proceed East you will pass a railroad underpass where the tracks have been removed. This used to be a spur line of the Monon Railroad. In the early part of the twentieth century trainloads of visitors and commuters would travel to and from Chicago on this rail line. During this time Cedar Lake was a thriving resort community.

The street starts to wind a bit, but as you crest one of the hills you will see a funeral home on the North side. This is the oldest operating funeral home in Cedar Lake. To the South of the funeral home, and across the street, is a flag memorial and overlook of the lake. Take a minute to pause here and view a very dramatic scene of Cedar Lake and the surrounding scenery. Note some of the many geologic features of the area.

Continue East until you reach the Cedar Lake Chamber of Commerce Welcome Center. Park in the parking lot and view the lake and the surrounding area.

Locate the boat launching ramp which is adjacent to the parking lot. From the ramp proceed to the second lamp post (a birdhouse is near to it) and begin the hunt in earnest from here.

With you back to the lamp post strike out on a compass bearing of 30 degrees.

Proceed a distance of 79.25 fathoms (fth.) and look down. At your feet will be the letterbox hidden below the surface in a maintenance structure.

Good hunting!
