This letterbox is on the trail on top of the Las Cruces Flood Control Dam that runs parallel to North Telshor Boulevard in Las Cruces, NM. From this trail you have panoramic views of the mountains surrounding the city. Make sure you bring water and start out early. In the summer months it can be very hot. This adventure starts on the North side of the dam. Directions: From I-25 Northbound, take exit 6. This is the Del Ray exit. (From east highway 70 you would also take the Del Ray exit.) Turn right at the first light (Del Ray). At the next light go straight (across N. Telshor) into the old “Tee Time” Driving Range parking lot. The building no longer says "Tee Time". It now says Las Cruces Fire Department Training Academy. Park your car here. The parking lot is used as a “Park & Ride” for carpoolers. Looking straight ahead you will see the Flood Control Dam with the Organ Mountains beyond. Walk across the abandoned driving range to the flood control dam. You will have to walk up a trail with loose rocks to get to the top. From here, put the Organs over your left shoulder and start walking. Look at the flood control area to your left and you may see roadrunners and rabbits. Yes, there is a real bird called a roadrunner. ;-) We've also seen Hawks and lizards on this walk. Walk approx. 2 ¼ miles. When you are out-back of the Outback stand about mid-center with the mountains at your back. Watch for joggers and people walking their dogs. When the coast is clear look at the base of the small mesquite tree in front of you and slightly to the right. There is a pile of rocks near the edge at the base of the tree. You found it! The box contains a hand-carved stamp and a log book (no pen, no stamp pad).

9/24/2007 We checked on this box today and it's alive and well. It looks like people are finding it. Hope the Bloomin' Onion smell doesn't make you too hungry! It was a hot walk today but there was a nice breeze up there and beautiful views of the Organ Mountains. Please log your find at www.atlasquest.com so we know you found it. Thanks!
