Schoharie's Palatine House, a medieval, German-style construction was built by the Palatine Colonists for their minister, Peter Nicholas Sommers, who came to Schoharie from Hamburg, Germany in 1743. (The name "Palatine" is a generic term for the German people who settled here in the early 18th century.) In 1971, with the aid of the Presbyterian church and a matching grant from the New York State Historic Trust, SCHA restored the 1743 Palatine House and created a "Living Museum". From May to October, visitors can experience colonial life and times by taking guided tours of the house, grounds and adjacent cemetery, where Peter Nicholas Sommers and his wife are buried. Through continued research, assistance from the New York State Council on the Arts and donations of 18th century articles from local residents, the 1743 Palatine House preserves an important part of our colonial past.

Directions to the box:
From the house, enter the cemetery and walk at a bearing of 330 degrees down the road. Stop when you reach the point where another path comes in from the right (just past the Bailey monument.)

From this intersection, take a bearing of 230 degrees and walk to the Rickard monument.

From the northwest side of the Rickard monument, walk 15 steps at a bearing of 320 degrees to the Sidney monument. Behind the Sidney tombstone is a wooden fence. Spot the dead tree behind the fence. Crawl under the fence to get the box that is under the roots of the tree just in front of the dead tree.

The Palatine House itself is open May Through October: Saturday, Sunday and Monday.12pm - 4pm.
