Directions:
From the junction of Routes 101 and 101A, go east on Rte. 101A for about 0.5 mile, then turn left onto Rte. 122. Take Stearns Road, on your right, and go about 1.6 miles until you see Rhodora Drive. Turn onto this road and go straight ahead to park for the sanctuary.
The Ponemah Bog Preserve features a three-acre pond surrounded by a floating sphagnum mat, which is in turn encircled by upland oak-pine woods and a few isolated wetlands. The name "Ponemah," full of Indian romance, was borrowed long ago from Longfellow's "Hiawatha," in which Ponemah refers to the "land of the hereafter."
There are a wonderful variety of trees, plants and birds that inhabit the bog. Bring your binoculars to search for birds, and bring your boots in the rainy seasons. For more information on the bog visit: http://www.nhaudubon.org/sanctuaries/ponemah.htm
Clue:
From the Sundew View lookout platform, turn to face 330 degrees, and take 12 paces on the boardwalk. You will now be on the third section of the boardwalk from the lookout. Turn to face 60 degrees. Bend down and reach under the cover of the black spruce tree. It is within arms reach. Please don't step off of the trail - the bog is fragile. Good luck!
