Find the chapel on the campus of Skidmore College. In back, look for the sign that begins the Spirit in Nature Sanctuary.

Cross over the wooden plank bridge and follow the signs made from tree trunks as you travel the feint path. You will read beautiful quotes about nature by Thoreau, Anne Frank and an anonymous Navajo, which will bring you to a series of square rocks. Off to the left is another plaque. Look up and you will see a sign hanging on a tree that reads, “The Marsh.” Keeping the marsh sign on your right, keep walking to find the quote by William Blake. Look up and spy a huge boulder straight ahead. This boulder is the center of the Sacred Circle but the barely-discernible path actually continues to the right so that you pass another plaque, a trail restoration sign and finally curve around to a bench. Near the bench, there is another plaque and a sign hanging high in a tree that points an arrow to the Sacred Circle. Go to the circle and put your back against the boulder and face the rooftops beyond. In your line of vision, there is a tree with a large hole at its base and a small red rock in front it. The letterbox is inside the tree up high on an internal ledge. Please make sure not to beat a direct path to the box in the snow. I don’t know how many college students visit the circle. Be aware of small colored flags in the area that denote Skidmore research areas that should not be disturbed. And put a stick up into the tree before you reach your hand in!

No dogs are allowed on this trail.
