These 5 letterboxes depict various species that are on Oklahoma's endangered species list. Some, but not all, are also on the federal endangered species list.

All boxes are located at Turkey Mountain urban wilderness park.
Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness is just north of 71st Street South and just west of the Arkansas river bridge on 71st. St., on Elwood. Turn North on Elwood and find the parking lot ahead 1/2 mile on the right. The trail head is at the northern end of the parking lot.
Difficulty: Moderate effort and some elevation changes of 20 to 30 feet but I am 60+ and not in good shape and had no trouble planting the 5 boxes. Time: 1 Hour. Kids should be monitored closely as climbing on the large rocks could lead to falls and broken bones. Horses are welcomed in the Turkey Mountain Wilderness area. Please bring your stamp, a stamp pad, compass, pen and an old rag to wipe off the box/your hands. NOTE; When done stamping in to each pouch/box, please place the log book in a baggie and seal it well and then place that baggie and the stamp in the other baggie and seal it well. Hopefully this will prevent the log from getting wet and ruining the stamping fun for future boxers. This area is well populated so use stealth when retrieving and replacing the pouches. Now here we go.

BOX 1: At the trail head look at the map on the back of the sign and notice the Ridge Trail in Yellow. That is the one you will be on after the first Y. Go across the rock part of the trail head onto the dirt path straight ahead. This is for horses, humans and bikes I believe. Continue on ahead to the Y and go right on the yellow trail. Cross the power line right of way and pass the first path to the right in the right of way and on up a short distance to the woods where you will take another trail taking off to the right toward the TURKEY MOUNTAIN letterbox....which is up here somewhere. As soon as you take this path in the woods start counting steps. When you reach 30 steps there should be a tree between boulders on your left. UNOBSERVED, Look behind the boulder that is left of the tree and under a small rock you will find the RED COCKADED WOODPECKER letterbox.

BOX 2: Continue on up the path 80 steps to a large scarred boulder in the path (last boulder in path) and then continue on up quite a ways to the T in the path. At the T turn left and step off 38 steps to 3 small rocks right on the right side of the path. Stop here, turn right and head uphill at ~ (approximately) 070* to the largest (its kinda square looking) boulder you see. THE OZARK BIG-EARED BAT is behind this boulder under a pile of rocks. Look around and when no one is watching, retrieve the letterpouch.

BOX 3: Go back down to the 3 rocks by the right of the path and head as you were going another 40 steps to a large hollow log on the left side of the path. THE AMERICAN BURYING BEETLE is hiding behind the log under a fairly large rock. When no one is coming from either direction on the path, retrieve the pouch and do your stamping. Please replace the pouch as found, well hidden with log double bagged and well sealed baggies

Box 4 From here go back as you came, toward your car to the main path just before the path to box 1. When you reach that path, turn right instead of left (a left would take you to your car) and start counting steps. When you reach 76 of my steps (I am 6'3") you should be at the start of a decending right hand curve in the path. Slightly ahead and to the left see a standing medium tree with a larger standing DEAD one about 12 feet behind it. UInobserved from eather direction on the trail, look in the fallen off bark in the front of the standing dead one for box 4.

Box 5 Continue ahead down and across the water run off and up the other side and start looking right as you walk. You are looking for a stone foundations with large bolts sticking up from the rock. Behind the back foundation stone there is a downed tree lying next to the stone. Look under the tree where it touches the stone for box 5.

This completes this series of 5 Endnagered Oklahoma Species. I hope you enjoyed your hike, hunt and finds of these 5 boxes and will drop me a line with the results of your hunt and I hope one of the descriptive words you use is FUN. Cordially, Glenn/Safari Man of Vincent Ohio.
