Matt's PEACE letterbox is an easy walk from the parking lot, perhaps 1 1/2 miles round trip.

The San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary, in Irvine, is within blocks of the 405 freeway.
Exit South on Jamboree toward Newport Beach. Turn Left at the 1st signal, Michelson. Continue on Michelson to Riparian View. Turn Right on Riparian, past the Irvine Water District. Follow signs directing you to Audubon House and the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary. Turn Right down a short hill into a parking lot. The first house will be the Audubon House where you can get a map. These houses are historical. There are more than 11 miles of trails, so get a map before you start your trek. Look for a sign directing you to the Nature Trail. Follow the trail past the picnic tables and around the field.

To find the Peace letterbox turn right onto the trail. Shortly, you will see a sign on the right that says Fledgling Loop Trail (0.5 mi). You will be walking between Pond 1 on your left and the main grounds on your Right. Continue on and you will be walking on the South Loop Trail between Ponds 4 and 5. There are several view paths, but continue on this main curvy trail as you pass Pond 5. You will come to an intersection with Midway Trail, and you will see some metal sheds surrounded by chain link fencing. One shed has a small antennae on it. Turn right around these buildings, and you will see a restroom (outhouse). You are now on Midway Trail. When you get to the end turn Left onto a gravel road. This is Shady Lane. Count 60 to 70 paces from the beginning of the gravel, and watch on the right for a small, narrow trail down the slope with about a 5-foot drop. Count about 15 or 20 paces from the road, staying left, to the second tree (bush?). It is the larger one. You will see, in the branches at the base of the tree, a small log that looks like a deer head with single antlers. Remove the log and the leaves to find the PEACE letterbox.
When you finish stamping, please replace the letterbox as it is described here. Have fun, whatever you do and “Peace be with you.”
