Road Less Traveled

This letterbox celebrates the poetry of Robert Frost. His poems give us a glimpse into rural life 100 years ago. In 1906 he lived in nearby Derry, New Hampshire and taught English at Pinkerton Academy. You can visit Frost's homestead on Route 28 in Derry.

The Road Not Taken

by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Make your way to Hampstead, NH. On Route 111 from Salem, NH driving East take a left onto Route 121. If traveling West on Route 111 take a right onto Route 121. Less than one mile on the left is a small parking area. If you pass a small auto repair shop on the right you have gone by the area. After parking, see the large wooden sign at the head of the trail displaying the Hampstead Conservation Area trails. Note that you will be on the Dogwood Trail. Follow this path till you see number 4, after a few steps take "the road less traveled". Go a short way and take the first left. Stay on this trail until you see a crude bench. Sit, rest and enjoy the woods. In back of the bench is a granite ledge where this letterbox lies waiting to be found. After stamping, notice the trail that intersects the trail you came in on. Go left a short way and bear left again. Continue on this trail which will bring you back to the parking area. If you cross any bridges your return will be much longer! Do hope you enjoy this great conservation area.

Please let us know how the "Road Less Traveled" box is doing. This is our first "placed box". The quest is an easy 40 minute hike.
