Last checked on 7/2/08 & all is well!

West Branch, the county seat of Ogemaw County, is located at the junction of M-55 and M-30 in Michigan’s northeast Lower Peninsula.
This town was given its name from its location on the west branch of the Rifle River. It began in the early 1870’s when the Jackson, Lansing & Saginaw Railroad built a line to the area for transporting lumber. It was given a post office in 1873 and organized as a village in 1885. It later reorganized as a city in 1905.

Since then, West Branch has experienced steady growth, with a diverse economy supported by tourism, small businesses and various production facilities, such as machinery, lumber processing and auto industry related products. The downtown area contains many unique shops and restaurants, and demonstrates a strong community spirit in its careful preservation of many its turn-of-the-century style buildings and architecture.

Check out http://www.wboctvb.com/ for more visitor information and make sure to look up and see the famous “Smiley” on the watertower that has made West Branch so memorable to many visitors.

CLUES:

Begin at Iron’s Park in downtown West Branch, parking near the children’s play area and the bathrooms.

Look at the West Branch Riverwalk sign and grab a bag or two if you’re boxing with some four-legged friends. Follow the path to Fort Austin and feel free to play for awhile, just pay attention to the date the fort was dedicated.

Continue following the path over the river (thanks to the Clean Michigan Initiative) and through the woods, but don’t stop to play volleyball.

Take a left at the fork in the path and please do stop to play a little basketball. After playing for awhile, go to the basketball hoop at the west end of the courts. From here, set your compass at 250 degrees, put your thinking caps on and refer back to that date you saw earlier in your walk. . .

The number of steps you need to take can be calculated by following these steps: 1. add the day and month together (day + month) 2. divide the year by that answer (year /day+month) 3. subtract 11 (year /day+month – 11 = number of steps to the box)

Good luck and as always, be discreet and rehide the box well!
