Location: At the intersection of Hwy 35 and Hwy 77 (Main Street), head west on Hwy 77 for a block or two. You’ll see a great playground on your left (south side of road). Pull in here to park (and play?).
Time: ~30 minutes roundtrip
Distance: Less than 1 mile
Terrain: Level crushed stone trail, but off trail down a decline to find the box.

A welcome sign of the coming spring, this red-breasted bird won the hearts of school children across the state, who voted to name it the state bird in 1926-27. Perhaps you’ll spot one during your hike!

To discover this popular bird, go to the trail that lies to the west of the parking area. Take the trail heading south and soon you’ll come to a bridge with great views of the Yellow River below. From the far end of the bridge, take 170 steps. Stop and take a bearing of 90 degrees. Proceed in this direction for 22 steps to a triple birch (30-SEP-09 update: apparently now a "double-birch" with only a two-foot stump remnant of the third Birch.) The state bird is nested in the end of the fallen birch branch.

Please reseal, replace and rehide everything carefully so this box is available for future visitors. Since we don’t live in the area, status reports would be greatly appreciated!

Hike length: 1 mile
