Location: A county recreational area located east of Merrilan. Take Highway 95 east for approximately 5-6 miles to a parking lot for the L/T Mound Rec Area on the north side of the road. There is a fee if you bike or ski, but no fee for hiking. You may not hike if the trails are groomed for cross-country skiing.
Distance: 1 mile
Terrain: Fairly level wide dirt/sand trail through the woods. Be alert, since the trail is also used by bikers.
Adopted as Wisconsin's official state flower in 1909, this flower has gentle green leaves and purple petals that sway in the breeze. It is one of the first to bloom in spring and reflects Wisconsin's scenic beauty. Perhaps you’ll spot some along the trail if you come at the right time of year.
Start at the trailhead and follow the Rock. When you reach an intersection, take a left. As you approach another intersection, watch on your right for a fallen tree parallel to the path. It has a chunk of charred tree laying in front of it. Look under the main tree, near the split of two branches to see where the state flower is blooming, even if it isn’t spring when you search!
Please reseal, replace and rehide everything carefully so this box is available for future visitors.
Take a left when you reach the next intersection and continue on to return to your vehicle.
Since we don’t live in the area, status reports would be greatly appreciated!
