THE GREAT PUMPKIN LETTERBOX
MENDON PONDS PARK
POND RD. Mendon, NY

The Great Pumpkin is an unseen character in the comic strip Peanuts by Charles M. Schulz.

The Great Pumpkin is a Santa Claus-like being that seems to exist only in the imagination of Linus van Pelt. Every year, Linus sits in a pumpkin patch on Halloween night waiting for the Great Pumpkin to appear. According to Linus, the Great Pumpkin rises out of the pumpkin patch he finds to be most "sincere". ("Look around you! Nothing but sincerity as far as the eye can see!") The Great Pumpkin then flies through the air to deliver toys to all the good little children in the world. In one strip, Linus claims that the Great Pumpkin has in fact been seen by people other than himself in pumpkin patches across the country, if not the world, indicating that if the Great Pumpkin is indeed imaginary, his existence is at least believed in by people other than (and even more suggestible than) Linus. The fact that Linus is, aside from his pumpkin faith, one of the most sober-minded characters in the strip seems to be a point in his favor, and adds great irony to his irrational belief in The Great Pumpkin.

Charles Schulz himself, however, claimed no motivation beyond the humor of having one of his young characters confuse Halloween with Christmas. In the 1959 sequence of strips in which the Great Pumpkin is first mentioned, Schulz also has Linus suggest that he and the other kids "go out and sing pumpkin carols".

Park at #21 Horsetrailers Parking area off Pond Rd. If you hear dogs barking when you get out of the car then you will know you are at the right spot. Let’s hope the Great Pumpkin likes Dogs!! You can check the trail map sign in the parking area. While looking- you will see a trail to your left and to your right. You will take the trail to your left. Begin walking and remember to watch your footsteps as these are heavily used horse trails. Imagine that this is a Pumpkin patch – watch, look, listen maybe you to will see the Great Pumpkin?! You should see lot’s of white tail deer. There are a few oak trees here and there. As you go along you will see a trail branch on your right and head uphill take this,it will give you a better vantage point to watch for the Great Pumpkin that you seek. As you reach near the top of the hill you will see a 2 trunked tree on your left. Go there and sight across to the first tree on the right side of the trail. Scan the Pumpkin patch and horizon while there to see if the Great one is on his way! When you have your tree in sight go there and on the backside nestled in the grass/sticks you will find the Great Pumpkin that you seek.

Do your thing and replace it as you found it. Continue on the trail going east until you meet up with another trail. Turn right here for a short walk back to your car.

**This was originally going in a real pumpkin Patch but it can have a longer life here in our Imaginary Patch**
