I have recently had the opportunity to travel to northern Arizona several times. I spent a good deal of time during each of my visits outdoors hiking and exploring this mesmerizing area of the country. This series is dedicated to the unique beauty I found there, and my desire to bring a piece of that home.

There is a stark difference between the Missouri landscape and that of the Southwest, making it both startling and exciting. Missouri has lush green rolling hills, beautiful bluffs, scenic riverways, and caves aplenty, while the Southwest has red deserts, stately suaguaro cacti, spindly white aspens, cascading canyons, and formidable mountain peaks. All of these elements combine to form a sort of environmental mysticism completely different than anything we can experience here at home. A simple sojourn down a hiking trail can quickly turn into a journey down a more spiritual path when it opens to reveal mist covered canyons as expansive as the eye can see.

The Southwest also speaks its own language in terms of symbols. Anasazi petroglyphs dot the sidewalls of slot canyons all over the Colorado Plateau and pieces of Navajo and Zuni culture dominate the Four Corners region. The history of the Southwest comes alive through ancient images that have helped to spread the magic of this region steeped in Native culture.

Though I can’t bring the Southwest to Missouri (you’ll have to visit for yourself), I can bring some of its symbols. Here is your opportunity to go on your own vision quest. As this is a VISION quest, be sure to keep your eyes open at all times so that you can have as many visions as possible. This is a sequential quest, so you’ll have to find #1 first, then move on to #2 and #3. Please bring your own ink.

CLUES:
In order to discover the starting point for your quest, decode the following using a keyword shift cipher. For a wonderful explanation of how to use a keyword shift cipher, see Lnd-Crzr’s “Will Work for Peace” LB.

Your keyword question:
These people are said to be the modern day descendents of the ancient Anasazi Indians. Who are they?

Take the trail SE out of the parking lot, strolling through an open field. At the T take a right and notice several orange fenceposts on your right as you continue down the trail. Look to the left and find one lonely rusted post that stands on the side of the trail just as it enters the woodline. From the post, continue 7 paces to a tree with an abnormally large base just off the left side of the trail. From the backside of this tree’s twin, go 16 paces 94 degrees to a knobby tree. Stand on the west side of this tree and head 7 paces at 330 degrees through a skinny sister to a log with a hollow west side. SEE what you can find inside!

As this area is visible to the trail, you may want to move to another location to stamp in so that unknowing eyes won’t spoil your solitary vision. Also, please re-hide well, replacing all rocks and ensuring that, oddly enough, no part of the box is visible. When you return from your quest, drop me a line via the 'contact the placer' link and let me know how your journey went.
