This box is missing. Sorry! We plan to replace it, but haven't been able to replace it! We will place an update on this site when we rehide it. Thanks!

Zoo View Letterbox
(Also known as Park View Letterbox)

Difficulty- Moderate
This hike is a short walk when it comes to distance (about 1/4 mile from the parking lot to the box) but it’s up quite a lot of brick steps, and then another short distance up hill. Hang on to those toddlers! They'll need some help.

John Ball Zoo is a nice, small zoo in Grand Rapids, MI. You can easily see it all in two hours, and it’s a great place for young families as the exhibits are located close together. Check online for current admission fees while you’re in the neighborhood.

John Ball Park, in which the zoo is located, has its own charms. There are always water fowl to observe or throw bread to on the small pond, some lovely nearly-new playground equipment, and lots of open space for kite-flying and picnicking.

This letterbox is located in the park portion of John Ball Park/Zoo located at 1300 Fulton St., Grand Rapids, MI, 49501. From Interstate 196 west-bound, take the Lake Michigan Drive exit, and from east-bound Interstate 196 take the Lane Ave. exit. Then, follow the signs to the John Ball Zoo. There are several lots in which to park a car, and there is a bike rack near the zoo entrance. The lilacs near the bike rack are lovely in the spring.

Directions to the box:

Just to the left (south) of the zoo entrance is a service drive. To the left of the service drive, running off at an angle, is a paved path.

Follow the path past a large climb-worthy rock toward some brick steps. Climb forty-one of these steps.

To your left (if you’re not climbing the steps backwards) you will see the path you want. It is currently edged with sticks.
Follow this path until you reach a gap in the sticks, and notice two concrete pieces off to the right.

If you look to your right and up, you will see a large fallen oak part way up the hill. Head to it.

The section you are concerned with runs between a moderate sized maple on the left and a large oak on the right. The box is inside the log. It is best accessed from the crack in the top of the log.

This box can accommodate very small hitchhikers, and the pen is missing.

When you’ve finished, head back to the steps. If you keep climbing them, you will reach an out-of-the-way section of John Ball Park. There is a picnic pavilion, another new section of playground equipment that is great for younger kids, and a nice view of the zoo. Enjoy!
