1/14/08 BOX IS THERE BUT CONTENTS ARE MISSING... We will replace when we get a chance. Clue will be updated then.

Interurban Trail Information: It’s not difficult to see why the Interurban Trail is one of the most popular trails in Bellingham. The variance in foliage, ecosystems, views and branching side trails have much to offer the day hiker or biker. The trailhead begins on the south side of town and snakes through the woods along the western slope of Chuckanut Mountain for roughly six miles.

The trail is well groomed and flat -- the remains of an old rail transit system with fine crushed gravel that can accommodate several hikers walking abreast. The Interurban Trail connects to all 3 parks in this series, and if you want to find all 3 boxes on foot or on bike, it should be about 4 miles round trip, give or take. You can also drive to all 3 parks and follow the clues individually.

Directions to Marine Park - From 1-5, take the Fairhaven Exit (Exit 250) and go west. Follow Fairhaven Parkway until it intersects with 12th street. Turn right. Turn left on Harris Street and follow it down to the water. There's a sign for Marine Park on the left hand side. The park is open dawn to dusk.

Clues: Park in the first parking area, between the fire hydrant and the concrete peninsula. Enjoy the park for a little bit. Although small, it has spectacular views of Puget Sound, the San Juan Islands, and the seagulls.

From the parking lot, look south through the hedge. You want to take one of the openings in the hedge and cross the railroad tracks to the beginning of the Interurban Trail. BE VERY CAREFUL CROSSING THE TRACKS!!!!! You need to cross 3 sections of railrad tracks. Start down the gravel path to the no-leash area (this box is very dog-friendly!) until you come to a trailmarker and a choice. Ahead of you is a very nice heron colony, including a nest, but you want to go left (Fairhaven Park 1 mile and Arroyo Park 1.9 miles).

Follow the Interurban Trail around a corner until you reach a Y in the trail and the next trailmarker (4th Street Loop). Stand even with the trailmarker and turn to face the way you came. Stride 19 strides back down the trail toward Marine Park. Stop and look to the right. Do you see the lamp post through 2 trees? There's a little trail (trail is kind of a generous word here) going toward the fence. Go 8 paces (or around 10-ish steps) toward the lamp post, between two rhododendron bushes, and look right again. Now you see a tree. At the base of the tree, under a mossy rock is the letterbox.

Watch out for muggles and re-hide very carefully!
