I am deeply connected to a sense of place as are most outdoor-type people. Eagle Tail Mountain has always drawn me to it from that first time when I was moving to New Mexico immediatley after graduating from college. I have driven by it many times, photographed it, drawn and painted it. At times I wish I could fly over and around it to get a birds-eye-view. So I hope you enjoy this view as well!
Difficulty: Easy
Handcarved?: Yes
Hitchhiker Friendly?: No
Precautions: Don't wear open toed shoes: prickly pear cactus and red ants!!!!!!
Directions:
Head north on I-25 and go past Las Vegas and Wagon Mound. Stop in Springer and eat breakfast or lunch at the Brown Hotel... it is like time traveling! The Chile-Browns are fantastic! Get back on I-25 North and after Maxwell you will pass mile marker 433. Pull off the freeway at the rest area right at mile marker 434 and park as far to the north as you can. From the north end of the parking area take a heading at about 20 degrees. You will be walking through some pruned pinon trees. **Beware of very low-to-the-ground prickly pear cacti!!** Keep walking and you will start to drop down out of site of the rest area.
To the Box:
Find the 2nd furthest pinon to the north... the only one with a rock at its base. The letterbox is under this small rock. Enjoy!
Please email me with the condition of the box since I no longer live in the great state of New Mexico. Let me know what you think of the view as well!
