8/2014 update - see below
The Michigan Canoe Racing Association has a Canoer’s memorial on the south bank of the Au Sable River. Dedicated to Gerald Curley, who died while canoeing the Au Sable, this memorial is located on the Highbanks Hiking and Ski Trail. Seven miles long, this trail affords some beautiful views from bluffs high above the river. There are also a couple of optional opportunities to hike down to the water for those who like staircases with LOTS of steps.
To find this box, you can park at the Canoe Memorial site or hike in from the Lumberman’s Monument. Head in the direction of the Iargo Springs interpretive site. Pass two blue diamonds, coming into a clearing with 6 tall, straight, nearly naked soldiers. Head back into the forest, past a third diamond. Pass a fourth diamond that is close to a broken tree, and reach the fifth diamond, which is next to a fallen tree that bears a strong resemblance to an oversized centipede (at least to my imagination). Facing the water, behind the diamond tree lies a tree with a triangle behind it. In an angle lies the memorial you seek.
9/13/2010: I am told by 2 successful finders that there may have been more trail blazes added. Here are updated clues - thanks to SpringChick and horserider for the information!
5 diamonds from the trail entrance, the soldiers in the clearing have been cut down and are now just stumps, the box is at the 6th diamond after the clearing.
9/2012 - Roaming Rhonda and Jen-knee-fur report that they continue to add blue diamonds - and it is now 10 diamonds after the clearing.
8/2014 - Oz Fan reports 9 diamonds from Highbanks Trail sign in parking lot.
