The Sanilac Petroglyphs are ancient sandstone carvings, left by unknown prehistoric artists between 300 and 1000 years ago. There is also a 1 mile nature trail at the site, which takes you through a variety of sandstone formations.

To find the “updated” version of the native American archer that was originally carved here between 300 and 1000 years ago, start by viewing the ancient carvings. Follow the nature trail, passing potholes, rock carvings, the meadow and Thunder Rock. You will cross the river on a suspended foot bridge. Shortly thereafter you will see a white birch tree on the right side of the trail. The rubber carver is hiding there.

** 4/2012 - the birch tree has fallen, but the box has been placed in the stump it left behind. Thanks GLK1! **

Once you have stamped in, continue on the trail to see a native American campsite.

The Sanilac Petroglyphs are only open during the summer, but the nature trail is open year-round. For more information, see http://www.michigan.gov/hal/0,1607,7-160-17447_18595_18612-54563--,00.html
