Kid and pet friendly; compass desirable.

This hike is probably a mile round-trip. It has a short, fairly steep elevation gain and so is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers.

Martin Luther King Jr. Park is located on Walnut Blvd in Corvallis. When you arrive, park in the main (lower) parking lot and take the paved path that stretches out in front of you. You will see the playground on your right, then pass several benches on your left as well as a couple of paths, but continue walking until you reach the first paved path on your left.

Before long the paved path turns to gravel and you'll find yourself on a straightaway. Eventually your path curves off to the right and at this point you'll notice a white pole and an elevated cement manhole in the brush just off the path. Make your way to these markers, then turn around facing the direction from which you came. Backtrack 25 paces and you'll see on your right the dirt path that will take you into the woods.

When you reach the sleeping giant which blocks your path, climb over him. Be cautious in this area for I've been told there are wild things about. After you pass the sleeping giant, look for the first trail on your right. It climbs a fairly steep hill so - up you go! When your path levels out again, you'll step over a small tree across the trail with a mossy hollow stump next to it. Before long you'll come to a second, longer tree across the path. From this tree, count 70 more paces and then stop.

Off the trail to your right, do you spy the dragon and his lookout? You can tell that the hollow tree beside him is a lookout because stairs have been nailed to it, but I wouldn't climb them. The dragon looks fearsome but take courage! Stand with your back to his mouth. Take four paces directly north and look for the treasure in the moss near your feet.
