The Deschutes River Trail follows the river from a point ½ mile from the Bend city limits to Benham Falls. The trail is well used year-round by runners, walkers, and mountain bikers. The Trail can be accessed from Meadow Camp Picnic area, off Forest Service Road 41 (Deschutes River Rec. Area just past The Inn of the Seventh Mountain) at Lava Island, Dillon Falls, Benham Falls, or from Lava Butte on Highway 97. The views are spectacular, and there are opportunities for kayaking, rafting, fishing, and picnicking. For detailed information about the area, check the U. S. Forest Service website for the Bend-Ft. Rock Ranger District. The Deschutes River has been identified as a Wild and Scenic River.

Driving Directions for the letterbox: From Bend, drive out Century Drive (Cascade Lakes Highway) to the Meadow Picnic Area sign at 4.7 miles. Turn left and drive slowly down the road past the Widgi Creek Golf Course. The road is dusty, so golfers and residents appreciate your consideration.

To the Box: Drive to the end of the road through the Meadow Picnic Area and park. Follow the Deschutes River Trail upstream. You will see spur trails that follow along the riverbank - although you can take one, the climb back to the main trail is steep and slippery. To your left is Lava Island. Look for osprey, hawks, and other birds and mammals along the way. The Ancestral Beginnings of the Deschutes River appears on your left. Study the panel, then turn back 22 paces to Medusa covering the rocks. The box is under needles in the rocks.

Second Access: Guests of The Inn of the Seventh Mountain can access the hiding place from the other side. Take one of the nature trails form the resort and go to the intersection of three trails. Take the left trail and follow the trail downriver. Look for the Ancestral Beginnings and follow the directions above.

As always when looking for letterboxes hidden in wild places, be very careful and check to see there is nothing in the hiding spot other than the letterbox. There can also be wildlife or dogs on the trail, so be watchful.

Enjoy! This can be a day-long adventure.
