The Moose-adventures of Merlin the Moose-terious
NOTE: Since this box was planted, the park now charges an entrance fee to the park and trailhead. FYI. It's a great trail and wonderful view and other boxes can be found along this trail not far from Merlin's location.

Deep in the frozen confines of the Crystal Cave, Merlin began to stir and come awake. Maybe it was global warming or maybe it was just TIME; after all, Merlin had been frozen here for centuries ever since the whole Arthur-Camelot-Morgan le Fey thing. Now he began to stretch and feel life returning, and with it., thoughts, plans and ideas began to take form.
With his unusual ability to see both the past and the future (after all, Merlin lived both backwards and forwards), Merlin realized how much he’d been missing! Why, since the 5th century, when he’d been imprisoned within this frozen cave, an entire New World had been explored by those pesky Vikings and then settled by all kinds of people from all over the world, and Merlin, always eager to seek the new and unusual, decided to spend a little time exploring this New World on his own.
Assuming the form of the falcon for which he was named, Merlin flew north and west, and, after some extensive island-hopping across the North Sea from Wales to Ireland, to Iceland, then Greenland, he found himself at last in Nova Scotia, from which he made his way toward the north woods of Maine. Finding himself near Lake Mooselookmeguntic, Merlin made another amazing discovery: here were the largest “deer” he’d ever imagined, with enormous flat antlers! This, he found, was called a Moose, and Merlin, fascinated, decided to join them for awhile and see what adventures he might have in that form. So, Merlin became a moose.
Munching willows with his fellow-moose in late October, Merlin began to hear rumors of a big moose-gathering somewhere far to the south, in Texas, near Lake Grapevine. This sounded like great fun to Merlin, who was beginning to wish for a warmer climate away from all this deep cold snow, and the idea of a lake in Texas, especially one located near so many wineries, sounded pretty good!
Hitching rides south wasn’t so easy for a Moose, but Merlin managed to find a few obliging truckers who didn’t mind if he rode along (some of whom didn’t even seem to care that he was a moose). Eventually Merlin found himself in north Texas, where he m,anaged to catch a ride in a little Miata sportscar with a bumper-sticker: “I Brake For Moose.” With the top down to accommodate his antlers, he just managed to squeeze into the tiny car. They by-passed the larger cities of Dallas and Ft. Worth and, following the landing-patterns of large jet planes, headed north of the DFW airport to the historic little town of Grapevine. Now, to find that lake and join all those other meese at that gathering, and maybe get a nice glass of red wine and sit by a fire warming his large moose-hooves after all these moose-adventures.
And where is Merlin now?
Finding the lake and crossing the dam, Merlin found the North Shore Trail at Rockledge Park. Merlin wandered along this trail for about a mile until he came in sight of a bridge just past a T-intersection. Instead of going left or right at the intersection, Merlin turned around and retraced his steps back uphill for about 12 paces and then sat down on an old twisted log beside the path to rest, and there is where he can be found. Look behind the log, tucked well under a small branch of a nearby pine tree, to find this Moose-terious letterbox. Enjoy the Moose-adventures along the way! And remember, as always -- please recover well! Merlin’s resting place is now next to a very busy trail. Please be sure he’s there for the next finder, tucked well under his log and covered with bark.
