Difficulty: about 1 mile round trip on wooded trail; some scrambling up rocks.

Location: Carderock Park [Note: Someone else has planted the "Carderock" box in the same park. Take the clues for both boxes when you go!]

Directions: From DC: take Clara Barton Parkway outbound.

From I-495 (Capital Beltway) go west on River Road (exit 39) to Seven Locks Road. Turn left on Seven Locks. Turn left on MacArthur Blvd. Turn right at Clara Barton Parkway (a stop sign -- there is an arrow pointing to I-495.) Turn right onto the parkway (again, the arrow points to I-495).

Continue approximately 2 miles to the sign for Carderock. Follow the signs to the picnic area. At the park, go left to the parking area near the trailhead. Park in the far end of the lot.

Clues: Find the sign that says "Billy Goat Trail 75 ft. ahead." Take the trail. Go down the stairs. Cross the bridge. The river will be on your right. Follow the blue blazes. Eventually you will have to clamber over some rocks. A blue blaze will be on one of the rocks. After you get to the other side, look for the next blue blaze on a tree on the right. (If you get to a second place where you have to clamber over rocks, you have gone too far.) From the blue-blazed tree, take a compass reading of 40 degrees. (If you forgot your compass, look to the left.) You will see a big, fat, straight tree. The box is hidden in a hole on the back side of the tree under some rocks.

After returning to your car, go find the Stone Arch Letterbox nearby. Return to the Clara Barton Parkway towards Washington. Exit at the Cabin John exit. Turn right on MacArthur Boulevard to the one-lane bridge. (If you go the wrong way on Clara Barton, it will end at MacArthur Boulevard. Turn right.) See the clues for the Stone Arch Letterbox for further directions.
