On June 15, 1864, Confederate forces led by Brigadier General Stand Watie captured and sunk the Union steamboat "J.R. Williams" on the Arkansas River. The cargo was valued at $120,000. Southern troops included Choctaws, Chickasaws, Creeks and Seminoles in what is known as the most inland naval battle of the Civil War! There is a historical marker about 4 miles east of Stigler that tells more about the battle.
Clues:
Stigler is at the intersection of state highways 9 and 82. If fact, this box is close to the road marker for the "end" of 82.
Where the two highways intersect, the Chamber of Commerce building is on that corner. Park in their parking and on the East side of the building(back) face the "lady" on the door. The first shrub to your right has a brick beneath it and now the JR WIlliams is sunk there, too! Bon voyage!
