Howard E. Butt Sr. grew up in an impoverished family, but had the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors at a friend's family ranch. He vowed that if he could ever afford it, he would provide this opportunity to other children who couldn't. With the success of his HEB grocery stores, in 1954, Howard and his wife, Mary, purchased 1900 acres on the Frio River, 60 miles west of Kerrville. Their original hope was to provide camping experiences for "maybe 100 boys and girls at one time." To fast-forward the story, the H.E. Butt Foundation now provides free facility camping experiences to over 22,000 people free of charge each year. There is a lot of other wonderful things that happen on the Foundation property, including their adult retreat center, Laity Lodge, and their youth camp.

This box is located at a scenic overlook which provides a fabulous view of the Frio River canyon and part of the Foundation's property. We promise the view will be worth the drive! The stamp conjures memories for us which occurred about 300 feet below the box's location.

The Scenic Overlook is located on TX-83 about 7.3 miles south of the intersection with TX-39. (If you're coming through Kerrville, we recommend taking 39 west--a beautiful, scenic drive!) The Overlook is just south of the Foundation Camp entrance & approximately 11-12 miles north of the town of Leakey. There is a small covered area & picnic tables are available.

To find the box: take the sidewalk/path down towards the overlook. Locate the round stone structure next to a stone BBQ grill. The box is behind & underneath this structure, masked by a rock. Be careful of possible Hill Country critters as you reach to get it. Please re-hide well and let us know how the box is faring--it's our first box!
