Triangulation Peak doesn't look like much until you get to the top and the view unfolds with Mt. Jefferson a mere 6 miles away. On a clear day, it is spectacular. You can also see Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens, and Mt. Adams to the north, Three Finger Jack, Mt. Washington and the Three Sisters to the south. It just doesn't get much better than this. Be sure to take a camera and plenty of water!

Parking Necessities: A Northwest Forest Pass is required.
Trail Difficulty: 4.2 miles round trip; Easy; 700' elevation gain
Season: Dependent upon snowfall, from late spring to early winter
Child Friendly: Definitely
Restrooms: No, sorry
Dog Friendly: Yes, but please clean up after them.

Directions to the Trailhead: Travel east from Salem on Highway 22 for 56 miles. (Watch your speed - the highway is closely monitored) Turn left on McCoy Creek Road #2233. Go 4.2 miles to a junction and bear left. Continue on a bumpy gravel road for 3.8 miles. Watch for a warming shelter and wooden cabin on your left at a forked intersection. Take the right fork and proceed to the trailhead on your right. The views from the road to the trailhead are spectacular - take your time. When you park, watch for anthills - they're big, active, and very common.

To the Letterbox: Follow the trail to the top of the Peak. Take time here to soak in the view, have a snack, and marvel at the fact that we're so lucky to have this in our back yard. Have a seat on the recliner rock with your back to Mt. Jefferson and look toward the rock pinnacle. 50 paces from your seat you will find a square on the left. On its left at the base is a nook with rocks covering the treasure you seek. Please rehide carefully. This is an area that is covered in snow during the winter and hikers during the summer. The trail continues to the pinnacle if you so desire - be careful.

For those who have a little of the adventurer in them, there is a second treat on this peak. As you go back down the trail, a fairly worn trail bears off to the right. Take it and follow down and around the base of the rocks to find Boca Cave. The trail is not easy to find, or easy to hike, but the rewards are grand. Again, be very careful, as this could be considered difficult during certain parts of the year.

Do let me know if you were successful.
