This fruit appears only on adult trees and thus is a symbol of patience and the fruition of long, hard, labor. This fruit is one of the most important wildlife foods consumed by birds such as jays, pigeons, and woodpeckers. Mammals such as mice and squirells consume great amounts of this fruit. Large mammals such as pigs, bears and deer enjoy it too. In fact, this fruit constitutes 25% of the diet of deer in autumn.

Location is Shelter house #2 at Shawnee Mission Park. Find the sign 'Sertoma Woodland Trail'. Walk on this trail at a bearing of 150 degrees. Pass the playground and go to the path intersection. Go left. Walk to the top of the hill and take 2 rights and keep walking behind the privvy. Walk to the large oak tree that is south of a bridge to an island. From this tree, go 340 degrees for 19 paces. Here is a loose grouping of 6 trees. Find the only decidious tree. Due north of this tree is a very full conifer. Letterbox can be found under this conifer near the trunk. Please replace as found and let us know it's still there.
