Walking in the forest affords many opportunities to see wild creatures. One creature you don’t often see is the shy Tree Hider. I know where there is one, however, along the White Oak Trail at Kickapoo State Park.

The trail starts near the south end of the parking lot for the Pavilion day use area. There is a sign for White Oak at the start of the trail. Follow the path into the forest, continue where the path curves to the left away from the ravine.

You'll begin seeing lots of broken branches and fallen trees. To the right of the trail a tall trees has fallen and are supported in a notch of another tree. Just to the left of the leaning tree, at the base of a larger tree is a broken stump. You're getting close now, so start walking quietly toward the stump--you don't want to frighten the Tree Hider.

Move counter-clockwise around the stump until you are facing the trail. Look inside the stump and to your left, moving pieces of wood to uncover the Tree Hider.

Please be discreet in removing and replacing the box. Happy hunting!
