***Checked on March 31, 2007 and the box survived our winter just fine and is ready for some spring boxers!!!***

The New York State Canal System, which includes the Erie Canal, is 524 miles long and has a total of 57 locks. The lifts of the locks range from 6 feet to 40.5 feet. The highest lift lock in the system–the 40.5 foot lift–is Lock 17, found in the city of Little Falls. In the original Canal this large drop was handled by a series of 5 locks, then in 1841 replaced with 4 locks. Finally in 1916 one single lift lock replaced those 4.

From I-90, take exit 29A. The turn-off to the Lock 17 Parking area is 1.5-1.6 miles from the toll booth. The turn-off is on the left-hand side just before the road curves and goes over the Theodore Wind Bridge. Park under the bridge. In the right season, many people fish here. Across from the parking lot you will see large stone walls–these are the walls of one of the 4 locks (Lock 36) that were present in Little Falls prior to the construction of Lock 17. Explore the inside of this old lock! Enjoy the views of Lock 17 and if you are lucky to be there when the Canal is open for travel (early May-early November) you may get to see a boat pass though the lock. The lock can fill in 10-12 minutes and empty in 7-10 minutes, so it is quite a sight to see! After reading the interpretive signs and enjoying the Lock, you may be ready to find the Letterbox!! As you walked from your car to the lock, you saw on your left a series of steps/ ramps that take you up to the Erie Canal Trail System. Go on up! At the top, turn right and go 16 steps. On the right just off the trail are several flat rocks. The letterbox is hidden under some rocks in a crevice on the far side of those rocks. One of the branches near the rocks has thorns–careful!!! Please watch carefully for Muggles–this area can be busy, especially in the nice weather. There is a bench in view just down the trail that you can use to stamp in. Don’t forget to write the Lock number in the appropriate place on the stamp image. Please replace the box carefully, well out of view with the rocks on top–this is our first planted box and we are excited to have it around for a while!!!

We hope you enjoy this beautiful area.
